Scanning, or the repetitious action of surveying an area of coverage, is one of the most prominent responsibilities for lifeguards, but it works in other areas too. We all have put scanning to good use at one time, or another.

Just an hour north of Long Beach in the city of Chatsworth lies one of North America’s great pioneering rock-climbing locations, Stoney Point Park. This natural formation has been a popular spot for climbers since the 1950s, hosting climbing legends such as Royal Robbins and Yvon Chouinard, the founder of the global apparel company, Patagonia.

Outdoor climbing can be a difficult world to get into. While there are some climbing spots in protected areas, or natural parks with accompanying parking fees or closures, finding a location doesn’t have to be a headache. Owen's Condition for Tuition

Each year the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) hosts the Owen’s Condition for Tuition challenge. By completing the challenge, participating undergraduate and graduate students who finish the challenge are automatically entered into an opportunity drawing to win a semester’s worth of free undergraduate-level tuition! Last spring, the Owen’s scholarship was awarded to Raya Torres, a current sophomore majoring in journalism.
