With the end of the year quickly approaching, many of us start to think about our New Year’s resolutions to improve ourselves. You might set ambitious goals and feel excited to start a new year, but as January goes by you find it difficult to stick to them. If this is you, you’re not alone. Your mindset and discipline play a key role in whether those goals are going to be met. Many New Year resolutions include waking up early, going to the gym consistently and eating healthier. However, if your only reward is to “look fit”, then it’s going to be a hard rocky road to continue those habits when your initial motivation runs out.
Instead, set tangible goals with the mentality of doing it to feel good about yourself. Think of it as “I get to go to the gym” and not “I have to go to the gym to burn off that meal.” This mindset removes the pressure and helps you enjoy the process, even when life gets hectic and you miss a workout or a healthy meal. Also, working out for 20 minutes a day consistently is better than missing out due to a lack of time.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Setting a goal to go to the gym five days a week is great, if you’re barely making it two days a week, aim for three to four days in the first month. Great things take time, and it’s crucial to make gradual improvements to create an improved you.
Make it fun! The process of improving yourself is supposed to be enjoyable. If your workout routine isn’t for you, try something new such as Pilates or a dance class. Use the SRWC to your advantage by taking a fitness course, rock climbing class, swimming in the pool, etc. Most importantly, you don’t have to wait until January starts. Every day is a new day; you can make the positive changes you want to see in yourself now!
