Our offerings include overnight hikes and camping experiences to stunning Southern California destinations like Crystal Cove and Joshua Tree, day hikes to places like Etiwanda Falls and Black Star Canyon and water sports like surfing and paddleboarding.

Camping is an exciting and rewarding outdoor activity that allows individuals to connect with nature and develop useful skills.

If you are going camping, it is essential to learn survival skills or fortify your ability to socialize with others and nature. For group camping trips, assigning roles such as leader, navigator, cook, and first-aid responder can improve efficiency and organization.

Preparation is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience; here is a list to help you out on your camping trip.

Before heading out on your next adventure:

  • Research the chosen destination to understand the terrain
  • Check the weather conditions
  • Check parking regulations – is it free or paid?
  • Investigate available facilities to determine necessary supplies and safety precautions
  • Review any permits or reservation requirements to ensure compliance with local regulations

Have the following essentials:

  • Tent
  • Ground tarp
  • Sleeping bag / sleeping pad for comfort
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Hygiene supplies
  • Multi-tool
  • Clothing: layers, rain gear, and sturdy hiking boots

Nourishment:

  • Non-perishable food such as canned or dehydrated meals
  • Portable stove, cookware, various utensils
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration system

Navigation and safety:

  • Map
  • Compass
  • GPS device
  • First-aid kit
  • Headlamp
  • Extra batteries

Safety is a top priority when camping. Campers should inform a friend or family member about their trip details and expected return.

To preserve the environment and maintain the natural beauty of camping locations, campers should follow the LNT (Leave No Trace) principles, which include:

  • Disposing of waste properly
  • Respecting wildlife and maintaining a safe distance
  • Minimizing campfire impact by using designated fire rings
  • Being considerate of other visitors

By following these steps, campers can confidently embark on their adventure, making the most of their time outdoors while ensuring safety and sustainability.

The Rock & Outdoor Adventures department at the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC) encourages all participants to engage in responsible camping practices and enjoy the beauty of nature.
