Miguel’s fourth debut album mixes his signature psychedelic R&B sound with funk, while subliminally communicating the artist’s political stances. “War & Leisure” is a definite departure from Miguel’s usual style, which can be heard in his 2015 album “Wildheart,” and it does not disappoint. He may have fallen off for a few years, but he came back stronger.
The album features artists such as Travis Scott, J. Cole, Kali Uchis and Rick Ross.
The single “Sky Walker” ft. Travis Scott emits upbeat energy and advises listeners to “celebrate every day like a birthday.”
A personal favorite of mine, “Banana Clip” is a perfect song illustrating the battles a couple might face and overcome together.
“Now” beautifully emphasizes the power of the people, particularly the power of our voices. Miguel sings, “We are the look of freedom, we are the sound of freedom,” highlighting the importance of standing up for our beliefs.
There are similar messages throughout the entire album. Miguel has perfectly intertwined two of the most powerful subjects in society: love and justice.
Give “War & Leisure” a listen not only for its passionate melodies but for its strong subject matter. This album should definitely be added to your next playlist. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
