Keanu Reeves in the Matrix

Is the Matrix coming back?

Remembering the first movie while we figure that out

Remember movies in the 2000s? The best “Spider-Man,” with Toby Maguire was released in 2002, as well as the first Harry Potter film in 2001. These movies didn’t have the best effects, but they still hold up because of the nostalgia factor. Lately, there’s been rumors on Twitter that one of these classic movies might be coming back.

The Matrix was one of the best movies of the early 2000s for a wide audience, not just nerds. Not all of the Matrix movies were great, but the first one really established underlying theme such as living in a world controlled by a powerful unseen force. Neo is the One, seen as a god, who can do things no one else can do. We see him develop skills like no others can.

The effects of this set of movies were surprising and visually impacting for its time, but now they don’t hold up. Computer generated graphics have come a long way, back then they didn’t seem to “blend in”. It would be amazing to see updates on the awesome slow-motion effects used in the first film or the effects used by agent Smith and the rest of his agent team.

According to a Yahoo! Movies interview Keanu Reeves is still up for the role in a Matrix film. Reeves is still a great actor as seen in the “John Wick” series. He could still carry a movie, but I would like to see him even in a small cameo or as a side character. There have been recent tweets by screenwriter Zak Penn where he mentions, “If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves” And, “Can't comment yet except to say that the words "reboot" and "remake" were from an article.  Let's stop responding to inaccurate news.”

The Matrix was one of the best movies of the early 2000s for a wide audience, not just nerds.

There's plenty of possibilities with this film series. Maybe the story will be about the previous “paradises” built by The Architect, or maybe someone taking over Neo’s place. We also don’t know the history behind Morpheus’ crew or Morpheus himself, and it might be interesting to see how they discovered they were in the Matrix and how were they liberated.

There was also the lesser remembered “The Animatrix,” a series of nine short animated films, that already tried to give the Matrix universe some backstory by explaining the war between man and machine which led to the creation of the world we know as The Matrix. Many fans liked this series not only because it provided lore but because it was well written and quality, unlike the second and third Matrix movies. Some people didn’t like the fact that they were animated instead of live action, but the Wachowskis decided that this part of the series would work best in an animation format.

I personally hope to see a story about Morpheus before Neo and who was he before he assembled his team. However, if the Wachowskis aren’t too involved in the project it might turn out to be a flop. They have made really great films such as “V for Vendetta” and the cult favorite “Bound,” and if they are absent I think we'll feel it. Either way, I’m excited to see what comes next and what direction the series takes.

Reuniting, Internationally

The year before I moved to the States, I joined a non-profit with a group of friends. The co-founders named it “The Cambio Project” after the word Spanish word for ‘change’. Being environmental activists, we wanted to bring about said change through photography. By the end of our first year of operation, the majority of our core members left to study abroad. Two went to the Netherlands, another to Canada and I chose America. Our lives quickly drifted apart.

American Dream or American Nightmare?

Many foreigners grow up hearing about how America is the greatest country in the world, and that anyone can come here and achieve their dreams. For many of our ancestors, this was true, but is it different now?
