Long Beach State University’s Associated Students, Inc. is featuring the first Conscious Collection Exhibit, an art gallery by and for veterans, those with mental and physical disabilities, international students and the LGBTQ+ community. Opening night for the event will be held at 6 p.m. on Nov. 30 in the USU gallery. The show will feature open mic performances and special guests, including councilwoman Suzie Price and members of the Art Council for Long Beach. The show will run until Wednesday, Jan. 31. The event is free of charge and open to all ages.
The Conscious Collection Exhibit is the first of what will become a semi-annual exhibition. Each following showcase will focus on artwork from four different communities.
This show is a great opportunity to connect through creative expression.
“As a veteran, I think this event will showcase how many of us fit into multiple categories,” said ASI Veterans Affairs Commissioner Gus Orozco. “It really highlights the intersectionality of different people’s different personalities, and how we often identify with multiple communities.”
All forms of visual art are currently being accepted. Submissions are expected to range from paintings, sculptures, jewelry, photographs, printmaking, or fine and applied works, according to beachsync.org. Pieces should be no larger than four and a half feet high by two feet wide.
The deadline to submit artwork applications, through beachsync.org, is Friday, Nov. 17 at 9 p.m. The application can be located by searching “Conscious Collection Exhibit Application.”
According to beachsync.org, artists must agree to abide by all regulations of University Student Union policy and refrain from offensive or vulgar imagery. All original work is subject to approval by ASI Student Leaders.
