Strong

By Jessica Orense

You don't have to build up walls to stay strong.

Break them down.

Open the door.

Strength lies in the open field.

It blooms next to vulnerability.

Delicate and naked.

But a fairy's wings don't lift her up if covered and hidden away.

Reach out toward the endless sea and find another like you.

Links stretching far and wide keeps us together.

An unbreakable chain to withstand the storm.

Linked through pain, through joy and through life.

No one is alone.

The chain is strong but delicate as well.

Links can be broken and whither away.

Until a single thread is left.

Weak and faint, almost undetectable.

But look far from the sky and see the big picture.

Every link, every thread makes a web.

Reuniting, Internationally

The year before I moved to the States, I joined a non-profit with a group of friends. The co-founders named it “The Cambio Project” after the word Spanish word for ‘change’. Being environmental activists, we wanted to bring about said change through photography. By the end of our first year of operation, the majority of our core members left to study abroad. Two went to the Netherlands, another to Canada and I chose America. Our lives quickly drifted apart.

American Dream or American Nightmare?

Many foreigners grow up hearing about how America is the greatest country in the world, and that anyone can come here and achieve their dreams. For many of our ancestors, this was true, but is it different now?
